Songs What I Does Like: Chapter Six

This month's musical offerings...

"Funeral of Hearts," HIM (listen here)
Rock (self-styled as "love metal")
Finland

So when I was in London last month, I picked up Uneasy Listening Volumes 1 & 2 because it was cheap and I was filled with a sudden wave of nostalgia for a band I adored during my teenage years. I played it to Ben and he was curious about what their original sound was like, so that's why this song is here: the first HIM song I heard, while mucking out stables at work one weekend and listening to the radio. Man. Good times! The lyrics from this band accompanied so many of my angsty teenage art. XD

"Gay Pirates," Cosmo Jarvis (listen here)
Indie rock
UK

You HAVE to watch the video, it's one of my favourite things about this song. Relatively low budget and only one camera and one camera angle used throughout, but the scenery and the superb choreography are so bloody clever. The great thing about it is that the song is deceptively simple yet clever, too! SO GOOD. Anyway; I've loved this song for a while, now, and last month I got to see it played live with Cosmo Jarvis supported Mad Dog Mcrea (good night, that!). Awesome-o. :)

"Rus'", Arkona (listen here)
Folk metal
Russia
My MP3 player died at the beginning of the month, taking all my music with it; luckily, I had most of my discography backed up on my PC at my parents' house, so I was able to download it all onto my new player when I visited the other week. I always have it set to play on shuffle, which means I'm listening to songs I haven't listened to in ages; this Arkona song is one of them. THAT RIFF. *dies happy* How did I ever forget how good this song is? I also love that Masha sings cleanly throughout ... don't get me wrong, I adore her vicious snarls, but she has such a strong, rich singing voice. Mm-mmm.

"Alba," Runrig (listen here)
Celtic rock / folk-rock
UK

Another band I went to see last month was Runrig. They're one of Ben's favourite bands, and admittedly I'd never heard of them before I met him. Occasionally I find the 70's cheese a little too much, even for my excessive cheese tastes; but at the end of the day, you can't do anything other than respect them. I also feel that my beloved folk metal genre owes everything to these guys and other bands like them; I can definitely see the similarities. This is one of my favourite songs of theirs.

"Crusader," Chris de Burgh (listen here)
Rock
Eire

Oh wait - were we just talking about 70's cheese? HERE, HAVE THIS. <3 Hahahaha. Man. Another song that I found on my PC and remembered how AWESOME it is. Now, like Funeral of Hearts, I was also mucking out and listening to the radio when I heard this for the first time; although it was my own horses, as I had Radio 2 on. Baha. Someone had requested this, and Terry Wogan and was like "why the hell not?" so they played the whole epic thing. I just remember being utterly spellbound and doing no chores for the entire 8 and a bit minutes. As a disclaimer, I would like to say that back then I knew absolutely nothing about the Crusades other than the extremely basic, Church of England primary school education I'd received on the subject ... so it was only later that I realised how horribly inaccurate his facts are, and how very anti-Muslim and pro-Christianity the song is. I am not supporting any of this nonsense, I just want to share because this song is SO GODDAMN EPIC and a great story, even if it's a biased one. :)

"Sons of Winter and Stars", Wintersun (listen here)
Metal: Too Awesome To Pigeonhole
Finland

Another song from the best album to have been made anywhere ever in all time and space and OMG I CAN'T TALK COHERENTLY ABOUT THIS MUSIC THE PURE UNDILUTED AWESOME TURNS MY BRAIN INTO RAINBOW SPARKLES AND ALL I CAN SEE IS GLORIOUS HAPPINESS.
