Ponies!

The last of the snow melted a few days ago, and yesterday there was sunshine and I was able to get over to Sussex and go riding for the first time in nearly three weeks. Winner!

Despite the sunshine, snowmelt and recent heavy rain meant that we stuck to roadwork to avoid the boggy ground.

The horses still got their feet wet, though, as the brook had come up over the bridge. It took us a while to persuade them to walk through; I really missed Pepsi at that moment, as she would love splashing through it! I'd be trying to hold her back!

r2

Bob hates running water, so I was actually really proud of him for walking through it at all. He stopped a couple times, but that was all - didn't try to turn round or do anything silly. On the way back, he was an old pro. Good ginger! (note: that's a parked car, btw. I wasn't dicking around taking photos while there was traffic waiting, haha)

r3

On my way home, I was pushing my bike down the track and concentrating on my footing (for some reason, this part of the trail is covered in loose rubble) when a horse dashed in front of me. My first thought was: "Omg! Loose horse!" and then I remembered the feral Exmoors and felt like an idiot. :P

I rounded the corner and saw this little guy grazing on the bank. Obviously, not an Exmoor - unlike the others he's tame, so I suspect he's someones old pony who runs with the feral herd. He's not always out with them, so I was ridiculously pleased to see him again. He looks like a little fuzzy Unicorn, glowing so brightly in the sunlight. :3

Compare the above photo to this one, of two of the Exmoors on the opposite bank; you can see how perfect their colouring is for a wild habitat, and how ancient this breed is.

r5

Another Exmoor makes the crossing. He was standing in the dappled shadows behind the grey pony, and I didn't even see him until he started moving.

Grey pony makes the descent...

r7

I was trying to take some photos of the Exmoors with the sun behind them, so little grey took the opportunity to say hello and get some scratchies. He's a sweetie. What a fantastic retirement he's having!

r8

I'm going home for the weekend; have two pub outings planned with Jen, a cinema outing for my third viewing of The Hobbit (FEEL ALL THE FEELS) and plenty of Pepsi time. I have yet to see my pony this year. D:

WOW there are WILD ponies where you live?? Awesome!! Absolutely jealous. Also jealous that you can trail ride - too cold and miserable here.

Not completely wild, no; we live on the edge of National Trust land, and they have this small herd of ponies to help graze down the vegetation. The ponies get hay left out for them in winter, and I presume they must get rounded up at some point for jabs etc., but otherwise they live as they please. They're tolerant of people but won't allow anyone to get too close.

Sometimes there are Highland cows out, for the same reasons, but they scare me. :P

What lovely photos. And that grey is very cute, clearly was someone's pet at one point. Does anyone look after them?

I rode an Exmoor in lessons when I was returning to riding. He was named Bearito, had a mind of his own but was just too cute to get mad at. They are very rare over here so I have no idea how he ended up as a therapeutic riding pony. He jumped, and had a lot of dressage training. He is now 28. Photos here.

I SO miss riding on the road. Did some with Feronia as a de-spooking exercise at our last barn, and she was very good. But the roads by the current barn are too busy for riding.

Gorgeous photos as usual. Love the Exmoor crossing and the high water through the pony ears. Hehe.

lovely pics! I'm in love with the 'fuzzy unicorn'! The colours of the bushes really makes the photo look so magical and dreamy!

I hope you have a great weekend, it sounds great. I need to go see The Hobbit before its taken out of the cinema!
