Songs What I Does Like: Chapter Seven

So I had a bunch of songs ready for this, but then last night came the sad news that HMV has become the latest high street victim. I think the current situation is that there are potential buyers, but whether it's saved or not is anyone's guess. It makes me sad because if it goes, then we have lost the last of our music stores. To be fair, it was inevitable: why would people go to a store and pay £15 for a CD, when you can buy an MP3 version for less money and less effort? But it's still sad. I have discovered so many great bands over the years by indulging my passion for cover-judging: browsing the CDs and picking one whose album cover appeals. In the past few years the metal section has taken quite a blow, often reduced to a few measly rows in some stores, but it still remained one of my favourite stores. And let's not forget the epic Oxford Street emporium, largest music shop in the world!

So this months Songs... is my tribute to a store that has both enraged and enamored me over the years, by sharing some of the bands I discovered through it.

"Fairyland," Angelzoom (listen here)
New Age / ethereal

I love this album ... her voice is just so ethereal and the songs so sweet and innocent and just nice. I like it a lot. "Save the fairyland we live in, where our failings are forgiven".

"Her Ghost In The Fog", Cradle of Filth (listen here)
Symphonic black metal

My inclusion of Cradle here may be cheating; they were recommended to me as a band I should check out, but I had little interest in doing so until I was in HMV one day and saw the Bitter Suites To Succubi album, which I subsequently bought. This is probably their most well known song, along with Nymphetamine, and one of my favourites. The official video isn't actually the entire song, but still: Dani looks hot in it, what can I say. Man ... this is back in the day when Cradle lyrics were BRILLIANT. <3
"The moon she hangs like a cruel portrait, soft winds whisper the bidding of trees; as this tragedy starts with a shattered glass heart and the midnightmare trampling of dreams. But oh, no tears please: fear and pain may accompany death, but it is desire that shepherds its certainty as we shall see..."

"...Where His Ravens Fly...", Falkenbach (listen here)
Viking metal / black metal / folk metal

XD I realise I share this every time I mention Falkenbach. I swear I do like others songs, too. BUT THIS ONE IS BEST. <3 <3 *bobs happily*

"Far Away," Freedom Call (listen here)
Power metal

I'm just going to go with the little guy in the fan-made 'video' for this ... "I love the rhythm! I love the bagpipes! I love the song!" XD Basically, this band is a 90's version of Helloween. They're practically identical. And I love them for it. I dare you to listen to this song and not have a ridiculous happy by the end of it. THE POWER OF THE CHEESE COMPELS THEE.

"Elegy", Leaves' Eyes (listen here)
Symphonic metal

I would just like to say that I had the pleasure of seeing Leaves' Eyes at Bloodstock one year, and yes - Liv Kristine's voice is exactly the same in real life. Soooo beautiful. I like Leaves' Eyes, because it's basically Viking metal but from the female perspective, haha. Lots of epic love songs about waiting for your wandering warrior.

"Terror", My Ruin (listen here)
Alt metal / metalcore / spoken word

I had a hard time choosing which My Ruin song to share, but I think this is their most striking. It is one of my favourite songs, particularly if I'm feeling a bit down and need an anthem to make me strong. These days they've gone down the more metalcore route, and I confess I don't listen to it anymore ... it just sounds like noise to me now. Ha. But the the Speak And Destroy / A Prayer Under Pressure Of Violent Anguish / Horror of Beauty albums are superb. I adore the mix of screams and spoken word and the lyrics are excellent. "It's true, I've got demons inside me; and sometimes, they need to speak".

"Broken", Sonata Arctica (listen here)
Power metal

Again ... I pretty much always share this song when talking about Sonata. BUT IT IS SO GOOD. *flails* Mostly I got myself hooked on the line "Do you really know me (I might be a god)?" which just ... gaahhhh. Opens up countless doorways of imagination in my head.

"Baile's Strand", SuidAkrA (listen here)
Melodic death metal / Celtic metal
THIS SONG. It's just genius. I love every second of it. It also has the mix of roars and clean vocals, which I am a particular fan of (especially when they're from the same vocalist). The album this song comes from is a concept album about Irish folkhero Cuchulainn, and this song deals with the tragic re-encounter between him and his son, Conlaoch.

"Hand of Sorrow", Within Temptation (listen here)
Symphonic metal

The thing I love best about this band is that ALL their songs sound like there ought to be novels written about them. I mean, Burzum has a collection of short stories inspired by songs (it's called Burzum: Black Speech. I have it. I wouldn't recommend it. It's a fantastic idea, but not at all well written), so I feel like WT definitely should. This is probably my favourite one, and the one that's invoked the most daydreams.

Within Temptation is my favorite! I was so excited when I saw that on your list!!

I also really ended up liking Angelzoom and Leaves' Eyes, so thank you for that. Have you heard of a band called Xandria? They're also out of Germany. I really like their song Ravenheart, maybe you will too based on your other tastes :-)

I LOVE RAVENHEART. <3 <3 I think my favourite Xandria song is "The End Of Every Story". Or maybe "Sisters Of The Light". :) ...Also I've just realised they had a 2012 album that I didn't know about? Thank you for mentioning them, they've been off my playlist for too long!

I'm really glad you liked Angelzoom and Leaves' Eyes; mostly I share this list just as an excuse to flail about music, not really expecting many people to listen, so it gives me a warm 'n' fuzzy when someone finds a new band they like.

I didn't know they had a 2012 album either! And once I saw Within Temptation on your list I had to go through and listen to the rest :)

Hand of Sorrow is one of my favorite WT songs. Absolutely wonderful, and appeals to my cheesy metal side.

I enjoy most of the power metal songs you have listed, too!

I love your reaction to the songs you love! (i.e. the GAAHH and *flailing*). That's just like me when I find music that speaks to me. My favourite songs all evoke those kinds of reactions from me. I always want to share my reaction and thus the song with others, but it's difficult because inevitably unless people have exactly the same taste as you, they don't appreciate it as much! X_x

I like the lyric you posted too, the "I might be a god" one. Bands with lyrics that make me think are amazing. It adds a whole other layer to the song. </p>

I'm on my phone atm in bed so I can't listen to the songs now. I shall re-visit tomorrow and listen then. :)

Oh, you should totally post some of your favourite songs - ones that make you flail around too! XD I would love to hear them and read why they mean so much to you.

Yes, it's brilliant when a single lyric suddenly leaps out at you ... there's one from an Ensiferum song that goes "And the snow starts falling in paradise as he gazes at the stars", and for some reason my imagination latched onto that one as well.

Haha, no; the Burzum book was written by some dude while Varg was still in prison. The author claims that he met with Varg and was given his 'blessings' on the project (for want of a better word XD), but after it was published Varg claimed he'd never condoned it and didn't support it at all.

But that's the wonderful world of Varg for you.

"I keep starting and ending up drunk or something" --> XD XD I dunno, that line just totally cracked me up.

Lyrics like "I love you, but not as much as my ship, sea and crew" and "This ship is captained by a successful psychopath" have made my day.

Thanks so much for sharing all the links! I'll have to come back and give a listen when I have more time. Love Hand of Sorrow! I hadn't heard that one before and it's awesome.

Nice to hear that Leaves' Eyes was as excellent live - that is so often not the case with live bands. lol. That reminds me that I need to upload the other album of theirs that I got so I can listen to it! So thanks for that too. ;D
