Ben's Shire Horse Experience Day.

I just had a lovely transcontinental Sherlock Holmes date with the equally lovely frangollo. :) Jeremy Brett!Sherlock Holmes, of course. The definitive. <3 It reminded me how much I hate the Irene Adler as imagined by Guy Ritchie; when you've seen the pure elegance, nobility, wit and generosity of Gayle Hunnicutt's Irene, you will accept no imitations.

So last weekend, glenatron and I toddled off to the East to go and play with Shires. It was his birthday back in February, and as part of his present I booked him on an Experience Day because he's never driven before and I know how much he loves to learn new skills - especially in regards to horses. He's made a detailed write-up in his journal, so I'll just add some illustrations!

He was paired with Comet, who is a legend of a horse (see my icon - taken a few years ago now!). Their first job was long-reining.

And then for some chain harrowing - and yes, it was quite a windy day!

Such a good old horse.

After lunch, he took Comet out round the village. Ben made it look like he'd been doing it all his life.

I believe the house they're passing here is 18th century.

Crossing the medieval bridge, in the transport it was designed for...

I think Dave is taking the piss out of me using the thumbs up signal to tell Ben that the road ahead is clear. Just a hunch.

Back at the barn.

Ben with the Suffolk, whose name is also Comet ... but Shire!Comet is better.

Celebrity fact: Comet is the Shire horse you see yawning in the auction scene during War Horse.

You know, I could get on with a big feathery horse.
