Snow leopards!

As part of my birthday huzzah, Ben took me to Marwell Zoo yesterday so that I could see the snow leopards. :)

Unfortunately, we hit a deer on the way in and although it was not Ben's fault (it literally ran into the side of the car) I think it pretty much ruined the rest of the day for him. We were also very unlucky with the weather (there was a massive hailstorm as we arrived, then it was sunny, then it was rainy, then it was sunny, and then there was a torrential downpour) and I had completely lost any photographic ability I may have had, so I did not come away with the armful of awesome animal pictures I'd hoped for.

But it was so very cool to see a real snow leopard - I'm sorry, make that TWO snow leopards and a cub! A little Nimbus! XD - and it was great to spend the whole day just hanging out with my Ben.

I managed to salvaged a couple of snow leopard photos:

Mama leopard, with cub. It was raining when we found them, so I was trying to find a spot on the perspex that wasn't covered in water droplets. The images were still a bit washed out so I turned them black and white to try and save some detail.

Baby is licking mama's head in this picture. :)

And papa leopard. There was water on the perspex front to the pen, which is why he appears to be surrounded by some kind of fuzzy nimbus (ha!). But in a way I think it's a rather cool effect. THAT TAIL. <3

I also got to see penguins swimming and playing underwater, and in the tropical house there was a really cool long-nosed horned frog that was bouncing around his tank trying to catch the AF-assist beam from my camera. I didn't get any good shots of him, but it was fun to try! I watched some YouTube footage of these guys, and when they eat their eyebrow 'horns' fold down over their eyes, which is both weird and cool. I guess it's to protect themselves in case the prey struggles?

Anyway, have some Bulmerhoe photos instead. Pet frogs need to be given baths to help them keep moisturised and to get rid of any skin that they haven't been able to shed by themselves. Unfortunately, Bulmer is of the opinion that it's some kind of Machiavellian punishment.

Pre-bath. Bulmerhoe is a burrowing frog, so he spends the vast majority of his time buried under the soil. It's dark and alone and that's how he likes it. He probably writes poetry down there or something.

b1

"I don't want to get in the bath! YOU CAN'T MAKE ME."

b2

"I hate life and everything in it."

b3

"Help. Meeeeeeeee."

b4

And this is why I would be a bad mother: he looked so adorable reaching out for me like that, and I couldn't resist scooping him up and telling him how cute he was and trying to reassure him. If a child did that? No. Children are not cute.

b5

But he had his bath eventually. See how much he's puffed himself up? XD

b6

Clean and shiny, I finally put an end to this horrific torture.

I have to agree, frogs are definitely more adorable than children.

Those leopards are beautiful!
We have a frog that tends to hang out in front of our apartment; for some reason, the first time I saw him, I decided to call him Lebanon.

OMG. Oki, so apart from my best mate (who bought Bulmer for me), I haven't met anyone who'd even heard of his type before, let alone owned one. You have just leveled up on the awesome scale. :D

Squee! Yay!!

There is a picture of the two I used to have. Mojo was the one with the lighter bands, Fluffy had darker ones. =D I wish I could find a couple again. =( They're really neat little frogs. Mojo would "sing" at night.

Aaaaahhh!! How awesome!! I was told they were best kept solitary. :( Wish I'd known that he could have had another little fat friend.

Mojo and Fluffy look like they were awesome. :) I've only heard Bulmer sing a few times, it's really cool!

From what I've read, you can have up to two in a 10-15 gallon tank. Mojo started eating better when I got Fluffs. Competition. ;) lol

SNOW LEOPARDS! My favorites!
Kids are adorable, but only when I can hand them over to their mothers after a while. I've never known anyone who had a frog as a pet ... and I'm not sure I would want to. Though, the reaching out pic IS adorbs.

I'd take frogs over children any day. And the zoo! I haven't been in SO LONG. Too bad the weather (and native species) didn't cooperate, but it was at least a good time?

That frog is the most adorably angry looking frog I have ever seen. We get toads around here all the time and I love catching them! I let them all go, though, because there are a ridiculous number of them and if I kept one the cats or the dog would find a way to eat it. (They eat a lot of the wild ones, anyway, poor babies.)
