The East of England Autumn Show.

Ben and I spent Sunday working with the Shires at the East of England Autumn Show. Usually the Wisbech Shire Horse Society holds their annual show here but, due to rising costs from the showground, this year they held it a month earlier at Sacrewell Farm instead. So instead of competitions, we provided heavy horse demos - driving, agricultural work, plaiting, harnessing, in hand, long-reining round an obstacle course and ridden. Unfortunately it was an unbelievably wet, cold day, that only brightened up just as we were leaving - typical Britain! So we didn't have all that many spectators for a lot of the demos.

Still, we are consummate professionals, and we soldiered on. ;)

As I was in the ring most of the time, this photos are almost all taken by Ben.

This is Freddie, a mini mini. Haha! I brought him in out of the rain before we left for the show, and as soon I put him in his yard he dropped down and rolled at my feet (he's about the size of a labrador, btw). I just whipped my camera out and took a quick photo because he made me laugh.

s1

How many Shires can you fit in a stable? :P This was the only shelter we had.

s2

Yeh, it was pretty damp. :P You will see the feathers get steadily worse as the day progresses!

s3

Macey being tall.

s4

Pip and Connor.

s5

I had to borrow a coat for the ring, as I didn't have an appropriately 'country' waterproof ... it was a little bit too big for me.

s6

If I lose Ben at any point, I can usually find him talking to the public about horses. It's just what he does.

s7

Also he makes sure small children won't be accidentally squished when they're having their photo taken. Man's a hero!

s8

Barry and Macey doing the long-rein challenge. They won this - which isn't surprising, Macey is a speed demon!

s9

Unfortunately, he's also all about the high head carriage and refused to put his fool head down in order to pass beneath the goal posts. :P Supply your own pun here.

s10

I often forget how big he is until I see photos of me standing next to him. Also, are you impressed by this horse's versatility yet? :)

s11

Mo on Bonnie.

s12

Nicky on William.

s13

Me on Macey.

s14

Macey has two speeds: stop and go. Have you any idea how hard it is to maintain your position on a stride this big when you're also having to hold back an immensely strong horse? It ain't graceful, that's for sure. There was a strong-man competition in the next ring, and although they weren't doing anything in there while we rode, their heavy metal soundtrack was still playing and Macey hated it. What a goon.

s15

William and Edward with the wedding carriage.

s16

We stopped off at my stables briefly to hug on some mares and give them their dinner. Here's Beatrice!

s17

And Pepsi. <3 I'm very pleased with how well she's looking.

s19

It was a very long drive home as the M25 had massive delays, but we did get to witness this magnificent sunset.

Fun fact: I've just calculated that Macey weighs about 15x more than I do, haha.

This made me laugh so hard! =) It's true, even for the somewhat lighter baroque horses. A lot of my horses (owned and trained) had a massive pull and in my heydays I could easily arm-wrestle grown men and win. XD
