5 Things I Wanted To Be When I Grew Up
1. A paleontologist. Dinosaurs were my first love, until I discovered horses aged six; then my plastic dinosaurs began to co-exist with plastic ponies, until eventually going extinct. :( Also, that baryonyx skeleton in London's Natural History Museum? I helped excavate that! Well, I helped brush away some of the dirt from a little bit of bone, but that's basically the same thing.

2. A writer. The first story I remember writing was written in primary school (I think I was 6 or 7) and was entitled The Yellow Wellington. It featured a magical yellow welly boot that would transport the heroine to a fantastical realm whenever she touched it. So what I'm saying is I invented the goddamn portkey, J.K! It was me!! ME!

Those two are the only things I ever really, passionately wanted to be; the rest were just passing fancies:

3. A vet. And then a veterinary nurse when I realised how many years of learning had to go into being an actual, qualified vet. :P My thoughts on this career didn't get much further than wouldn't it be nice to help animals all day.

4. An historian. I began this route by taking History for my A/S levels (until then, History was not a specific class), but failed miserably as 90% of it featured WWII. I was eventually pulled aside half-way through the term and told that history probably wasn't my thing, and as I was bored senseless by then I dropped the class. I did look into taking an Open University course, but it seems like I can't specialise in a time period - I would love to study ancient Britain, but in order to do that I would have to learn about other periods that I have no interest in. It actually makes me very sad how little time is given to ancient history in school; I remember learning about the Celts and the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons in primary school, but once we got to secondary it was WWII all the way. Oh - apart from that one time when it was WWI, instead. Sigh.

5. An illustrator. And then I realised that I can't draw. :P

I wanted to be a horse vet, but when I realized they're basically on call 24/7 I moved on.

Really cool that you got to help with a dog! My cousin is an archeologist. My dinosaurs were the "good guys" and my Barbies were evil. :)</p>

I always wanted to be a writer, too. I can't seem to finish a story, though, and that's kind of a big problem.

True, but the plus side is that horse vets earn a LOT. :P

Oh that's cool - archaeology was another career I was interested in, but sadly too late to actually do anything about it. Also I may have had my idea of an archaeologist's life glamourised slightly by watching too many episodes of Time Team (I don't know if you had that show). Does your cousin specialise in anything?

Hahaha! I love that your Barbies were the villains! That's brilliant.

I don't finish stories, either, because I'm a major perfectionist and I keep going back and changing things...

First thing I wanted to be was a veterinarian, but as I got older the responsibility of caring for pets, and the thought of seeing wounded, dead and dying animals seemed too much. Then I wanted to be a pilot, I took a few flying lessons as a teen. I gave that up because my desire to work with computers was much stronger than anything else, so that's what I did.

You took a few flying lessons? That's awesome! Still, you seem like you're pretty good at what you do now; maybe when you're an IT millionaire, you could have your own plane? :P

I thought the same thing about being a vet! lol. I thought I could just play with animals all day.

Yeh, it would be nice if there was a job like that!

Agreed. Maybe someday if I win the lottery lol.

I shared most of these ambitions! Also I wanted to add that my university was brilliant and I got to take courses that were specifically the ancient celtic isles history and if I could have taken more I probably would have been a history major :)

So you only had to study the ancient Celtic era? Oh wow! What university was this?

For the few courses that I did take, yeah! It was great. University of Guelph in Ontario :)
