Songs What I Does Like: Chapter Fourteen

Gah! I haven't made one of these posts since October. This is a bit of a bumper-edition, and that's still with me withholding most of the songs I wanted to share - I'll put them in the next post! THERE IS SO MUCH GOOD MUSIC AROUND. <3

"Mit dem Wind", Faun (listen here)
Pagan folk / medieval

I double dare you to resist the urge to dance to this song! It's glorious. I know that this album from Faun has come under fire from their fans - who believe that the band have 'sold out' by making a more accessible, folky album - but I adore each and every song on it. It's just so uplifting, and a lot of fun to listen to!

"Farewell," Avantasia feat. Sharon den Adel (listen here)
Power metal / symphonic metal

GAH. The opening melody just gets me right here; it has this weird kind of tragic beauty to it. I'm not massively sold on the male vocals, but when the track also features Within Temptation's beautiful songstress, Sharon den Adel, I don't mind it so much. ;)

"Save Me," Dark Sarah (listen here)
Theatrical / symphonic metal

I don't know how I feel about this! I was a major fan of Heidi Parviainen's vocals when she was the singer for Amberian Dawn; she was probably my favourite female vocalist, along with Louisa of Dyonisis (Louisa is the soprano and backing singer. Nel is the main vocalist; I love her voice, too!). So I was really excited to see that she now has her own solo project. Unfortunately ... I really want to love this, but it feels a little like when Tarja went solo, you know? It just lacks something. That aside, it certainly isn't a bad song. :)

"Strangely Beautiful," Amethystium (listen here)
Electronia / ambient / neoclassical

I'm really loving the dreamy, ambient stuff at the moment; I find it very good background music for writing or drawing to. This one is just ... well, it melts my little black heart. :) The female 'vocals' (she's basically humming - are those still called vocals? I love music, but I know bugger all about the terminology :P) are just a lovely addition to an already gorgeous track.

"Engae Pogudho Vaanam", Allah-Rakha Rahman / Kochadaiiyaan (listen here)

I literally have no idea what is going on here, but this song 100% appeals to my love of the epic and for that I adore it. <3 I think this is a song from a film called Kochadaiiyaan? Or a soon-to-be-released film? And the song itself is written and/or performed by Allah-Rakha Rahman? If anyone can fix my ignorance here, please do so...

"Winds Are Silent", Elvin's Tales (listen here)
Pagan folk
Estonia (I think?)

I rather like this mix of ancient/medieval style music with a more modern, rock edge. The female vocalist has an exceptionally sweet voice, too, although I find that her pronunciation isn't that clear - but it's such a pretty sound I don't really might that I can't make out all the words!

"Bird Seeds of Vengeance", Hatebeak (listen here)
Death metal

One for you, meri_sielu ... the vocalist of this band is a parrot. I'm just going to leave that here. :P

"Last Vestige of Old Joy," Nest (listen here)
Neofolk / dark ambient

Well, I'm in love. The lyrics of this song accompanied an image from a photographer whose work I admire and, out of curiosity, I looked it up. I had heard the band's name before, but didn't know their sound. As it turns out, this is a major failure on my part because they are beautiful! I love that dreamscape style so much. According to their Wiki page, their inspiration comes from "old folk and animal tales, as well as from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and the Grimm Brothers". Yes please. <3

"The Silvershade Lynx," Nest (listen here)
Neofolk / dark ambient

Yes, I'm sharing the same band twice in one post. I don't even care. I listened to this one based purely on the song title (lynx! <3) and it did not let me down. It's the kind of music that just pours into me and fills me up; I don't have the words to describe it. I also love the lynx's snarl at approx 0:43 (can you hear it?). :)

Within Temptation songs were some of my favorite a couple years ago. Going to go re-visit some of their music and check out your recommendations :D

Ooooh I get you about the intro to that Avantasia song! <3 FEELS! Sadly ir's only Sharon Den Adel's voice that grips me but I really like the medieval feel of it. I really liked that Faun track, I'm quite happy they've made a more 'accessible' folk album because I had given them a listen before and loved them but found that their older stuff was the kind of thing I had to be in the mood for but this track is lovely and much easier to digest. :)

Hahaha! Hatebeak I had heard of, fucking genius! I love it! XD

Heidi has a lovely voice and I think I enjoy her more because I don't know the context of her previous work but from your mention of Tarja's solo stuff I can imagine it and yeah, that makes me a little sad. I'll check out her previous work after I've heard more of her solo stuff, else I'll find it too lacking and won't appreciate it as much. :(

I really love the mood in the Elvin track, and in a way I think it works to the betterment of the style that her pronunciation isn't that clear, it gives the music a more ethereal feel. :) I'll have to check out more of their stuff! :)

The two Nest songs are lovely to relax and wind down to, I've been after some good ambient music, thank you! <3 Thanks for sharing these! In the spirit of sharing here are two contributions from me. :)

I've just discovered this and it's awesome! Simone Simons is one of my favourite vocalists. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE7_Zp0lX1c

Oh and also this by Leaves Eyes off of their more recent album, it's beautiful! I love Liv Kristine's voice :) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6c8SoEE0O4

Ahhh, that is one of my FAVOURITE Kamelot songs! <3 <3 It's just gorgeous.

I actually haven't listened to this Leaves Eyes' album yet, but I'm liking what I hear. She certainly does have a beautiful voice. I got to see them at Bloodstock one year, and was blown away by the fact that she does actually sing like that in real life ... I guess I half-expected that it was cleaned up or something on the recording. But nope. Liv Kristine is a goddess. <3

That's a very good idea re. Heidi's work. Be careful that you go for early Amberian Dawn when you check her band stuff out, though, as they have a new singer who is nowhere near as good. They even re-recorded my favourite AD song, Valkyries, and the new version is awful when you've heard the original. D:
